The first impression of a new place especially during traveling is often built up not only on the design or structure of the building but more on the vibe and the people around. When first entering my room, I realized in the first place, that Marcello was in there with whom I already spent the bus driving to Sayulita. In addition in my bunk bed, Amadeus was just rummaging through his bed and Petra was staying in the room, trying to hide her native german language while speaking English to the other folks. Well, she knows, that did not work out, I uncovered that mystery in seconds and was happy to have at least one European person around, even if it's Austrian. While chatting with Petra and Marcello, Amadeus left 'our' bed and the room, already leaving a unique vibe. I can already tell, that those people will accompany me for the rest of the week, which I'm really happy about and this is how they leave their footprints on this blog.
After getting to know the first couple of people and dropping our stuff in the hostel, we had a stroll through the town and to the beach, breathing in the vibes of the surf town, and afterwards went out with Marcello to Mary's Traditional Mexican Cuisine, a small and always crowded place serving typical Mexican food. We went for Quesadillas, Empanadas, and Tacos
for around 50-70$ per dish (~2-3€), as well as for myself for a Margarita and Marcello showing us his Tequila love, mixing Tequila with sparkling water and a bit of lime juice. Starting with the first Mexican dish and being provided with four different salsas, unsure how spicy they are, was our first test. Trying small drops on the finger or the served nachos is your best shot to figure out if you really want to pour that sauce over your food. Since every restaurant or streetfood stand has its own salsas, this will mutate into an inevitable procedure. But in the end: what is a minute of trying yourself through different tastes to find the perfect companion for your dish to satisfy your mouth, tummy, and heart.
Starting the afternoon with this, the evening proceeded with a fairly big party in our hostel bar, featuring three different DJs, an amazing location as well as good music. Even though people in Mexico are caring about COVID and wear masks even very often outside of buildings and temperature gets measured in many locations, this party was not restricted at all and it felt like the freedom, that everyone in this town was craving for.
This is how an eventful Day 1 ended and how the gates to surf, sun, Mexican lifestyle, and interesting new connections opened up. Especially the last point about people you meet during traveling that change the way you see the world, that you're jealous about, that inspire you, or that have just a special story to tell (remember Sarah) motivated me to give certain people the chance to share their story, their thoughts, wishes or beliefs or whatever they're up to on my blog in a featured article.
To start this, I asked Amadeus, my earlier mentioned bunk bed mate in Selina, passionate coffee lover and talented poet if he would like to be part of this blog, as a person, that inspired me for many days, made me laugh a lot and reminded me to be thankful for the small things in life, that make you smile and give your dopamine level a tiny kick. He happily accepted which I highly appreciate, which is why the next post will be presented by him.
